I'm looking for a comparison between the two boats. I'll probably make more plain water than the white water if stability is important but also the ability to go faster in flat water.

Paddlers to take on Green River Narrows Race

Since 1996 the first Saturday in November has marked the Green River Narrows Race where paddlers from around the world join locals in Henderson County to compete in a dangerous half-mile sprint through class IV and V rapids. Class V rapids earn their rating for being hard and consequential, with the potential for injury and even death. This will be Blake's sixth year racing alongside professional paddlers.

"This is a pure sport in competition where really you are competing against yourself because the river doesn't care if you are a pro-boater or if it's your first time down," said Blake, who lives in Asheville and teaches at A-B Tech. "The folks who are fighting for the 90th position are just as excited as the folks trying to win first and there is an amazing sense of camaraderie over all."

Blake, 32, had his first exposure to kayaking at Camp High Rocks in Brevard when he was 10 years old.

"We started with whitewater canoeing, and the last year there we started kayaking," Blake said. "Since then, I've been as responsible as possible, but chasing white water has been my motivation for where I live and teach mathematics."

Hack Bend: Press Release: Whitewater Slalom Kayak Race

Where the mountain snow is transformed into gushing whitewater play parks every spring - is known world-wide as a great destination for the whitewater kayaker, and slalom racing has been a part of this tradition in Bend since the 70s.

Last year, kayak enthusiasts Bert Hinkley (Pacific Northwest representative of the National Whitewater Slalom Committee), and Geoff Frank (owner, Alder Creek Kayak and Canoe) worked together to revive the Riverhouse Rendezvous whitewater kayak slalom race, this time in it’s fourth re-incarnation. Drawing top paddlers from Oregon and Washington, the race is part of the Northwest Cup slalom paddle series and is a Junior Olympic qualifier.

“We were happy for such a great turn out last year,” said Hinkley. “It was especially great to see so many Bend locals come and race their recreation boats.”

Whitewater slalom kayaking as been a sport since the 1940s, when Swiss alpine skiers embraced the runoff from the mountains to race the rivers on their off-season. Today, this spectator-friendly sport is known to test not only the physical skill of paddlers, but their knowledge of the river and their ability to use currents and river features to their advantage.
