Along with likely loss of Quarry Lake lifeguards, concession and kayak rental ...
MOUNT PLEASANT — No lifeguards are budgeted for Quarry Lake Park as part of the proposed 2012 county budget.
Along with that cut, Jeff Camell said he will not operate the park’s concession stand and will no longer offer hourly kayak rentals at Quarry Lake, which is along Northwestern Avenue.
“Without the lifeguards there, there will not be anyone to enforce the rules,” said Camell, who operated the concession stand the last two years on weekends and owns Kangaroo Kayaking LLC, a local kayak rental company which provides Quarry Lake rentals and concessions. “From a liability (standpoint), I don’t see it as a good situation.”
By not having lifeguards at Quarry Lake, officials estimate the county will save about $18,750.
But Camell, 36, who remembers swimming there when he was young said, “It’s a shame. It’s such a valuable resource to Racine.”
Geoff Greiveldinger, the county executive’s chief of staff, said the county had no agreement with Kangaroo Kayaking to continue concession operations at Quarry Lake next year. He said the company was contracted to pay the county 3 percent of its gross sales. In 2010, they paid the county $53.57 and as of early last week the county had not received a payment for 2011, Greiveldinger said. But Camell said Friday a check for $130.34 was in the mail. His payment to the county is more this year because his sales more than doubled from about $1,786 last summer to $4,344 this summer, and he was making a small profit, he said. He had planned to continue providing concession services next year at Quarry Lake Park, but not without lifeguards.
