NORCAL YAK: Kayak clubs for sea kayaking, river kayaking ...

About going out with a group for the first time. If  they paddle too fast and leave you behind, well, that doesn’t speak too well for them. Still, it’s in your best interest to find paddlers with whom you can keep pace. So check with your local full-service kayak dealer (some have their own paddling groups) and check online for clubs, such as those listed below. Some kayak clubs are very informal and membership is free. Others have nominal fees and requirements. Most sponsor day trips or multi-day recreational paddling while some emphasize skill and safety classes. Make contact before showing up for a scheduled meeting or event. Then you can confirm the trip is on and possibly get a better idea if it’s the right group for you.

Kayaking carries some risks, and every paddler is responsible for his or her own safety. Standard precautions from the U.S. Coast Guard include: (1) Always wear an approved personal flotation device. (2) Don’t go out unless you’re comfortable in and out of your kayak. (3) Take time to learn skills and abilities needed to paddle safely, from swimming to self-rescue. (4) Paddle with an experienced group, not alone. (5) Make sure someone outside the group knows where you’re going and when you expect to return. (6) Take safety, rescue, and navigational gear along with extra clothing that will not retain water. (7) Stay within your comfort range of ability, and keep an eye on others in your group. (8) Wear highly-visible clothing and carry lights, whistles or flares. (9) Don't drink alcohol before or during a trip. (10) Take an approved boating safety class, and observe all applicable laws while on the water.
