  1. Works for meee!
This long paddle works perfectly with my Emotion Glide kayak. I can now 'yak in a straight line; that's major. It's light weight and padded - doesn't hurt my wussy, girl hands - and comparable to (if not better than) recreational paddles double it's price.
  2. Great Price and Quality for Weekend Warrior
I love this paddle. The curved paddle sections are stout, foam handles are comfy and the quality feel is great for the price. It is fairly light (I purchased another brand 89" paddle from Amazon too for a little less $ as a backup for my tandum and it weighs a ton and isn't as nice...wish I...

Dan Haifley, Our Ocean Backyard: Whales can be enjoyed -- from 100 yards away

After a nearly two-week period in which humpback whales made a very rare appearance within a few hundred yards of our shores, individual whales have either moved further offshore in search of food or back along their migratory route.

It was a once in a lifetime chance to see these creatures up close. Too close, for some.

For me it began it with a photo that Steve Lawson graciously sent me of one emerging from the water near the Team O'Neill catamaran offshore Black's Point as the nonprofit O'Neill Sea Odyssey's science lessons were under way for a class from Gault Elementary School on Oct. 21.

I circulated the photo, hoping to draw some attention to our new, temporary residents. Others began to circulate photos they'd taken, and word quickly spread.

Over the subsequent days, a growing pod of spectators in boats, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards began to crowd the whales. Few apparently knew about federal rules to stay at least 100 yards away from the animals, guidelines that among other things will keep their visitors safe. The situation devolved into what Kenny Stagnaro, a highly respected captain and charter boat owner as well as resident whale expert, called a "circus."

Paddling the Hawkesbury At Midnight - Fat Paddler | A Big Man's ...

A busy weekend schedule meant no paddling unless I could get one in late at night, so I contacted paddler mate Ned, the engine room of the Team Fat Paddler fundraising efforts , to see if he was interested in meeting up somewhere. We decided to meet up at Mooney Mooney on the Hawkesbury River, known to many paddlers as the finish point for the Hawkesbury Canoe Classic , sometime around 9pm.

Ned of course managed to take a wrong turn somewhere and ended up on the wrong side of the river, but after doubling back we finally met up and a little after 10pm we pushed out into the inky darkness of the river.

After a quick discussion we decided to head towards the sea. As we reached the Mooney Mooney Bridge, we paused to adjust the boats and discovered that the current was rushing down the river in the direction of the ocean as the tide went out. As we passed into the darkness beyond the bridge, Ned made the brilliant suggestion to turn north up the Mooney Mooney Creek, which quickly found us bottomed out on a shallow expanse of mud! So we doubled back and decided to follow the channel markers into the darkness, moving us ever closer to the un-seen ocean somewhere in the distance.

For the Love of a Paddle For a while, I didn't realize how much I loved my kayak paddle. I knew it was a big step up from my previous paddle, and I really liked it, but never felt like I needed to write about it. An opportunity came along recently that sparked a long chain of
