Tips and Techniques in the Saugeen Shores Area
Note: Fishing tips, techniques and equipment related in this article may be well known by many anglers but are new to others so please indulge me. You may not agree with me and I do not claim to know everything about fishing. I am just trying to give you a general overview of fishing in the Saugeen Shores area. Thanks.
Techniques used by fishermen are many. Each person seems to find their own groove for the particular type of water that they are fishing, the weather conditions, and for the type of fish they are targeting. Time of day, the time of year, and the type of bait/ lures being used must also be taken into consideration. Scents on your hands can often cause you to be blanked when fishing so investigate the special soaps out there to prevent this transfer of scent to your bait or lure.
The Saugeen River has one of Ontario's best Chinook salmon and rainbow trout runs. It is located on Ontario's west coast and is about 203 miles north of the U.S. city of Detroit for those who are reading this south of the border. It empties into Lake Huron at Southampton and is approximately 102 kilometres in length. Remember, Ontario residents need an Ontario Pleasure Boaters' card if using a power boat and everyone needs an Ontario fishing licence. In the area where I live, the closest place to obtain a fishing licence is J&S Sports on the south side of Port Elgin.

Boat fishing and rig set up can be confusing to some beginners and understanding why on one day we catch and next day we don’t can be frustrating to anglers, and sometimes me included,

and I like to keep it simple and get them catching from the off, the system I use is my home made two hook Muppet rig (soft squid like lures) attached to 0/4 or0/5 circle hooks and tied to 30lb or 50lb clear mono line, these can then be fished over a simple lead or attached to a bar pirk, and on really hard days I like to attach long thin strips of frozen squid to add a scent and some realism, the circle hooks while more expensive offer almost self hooking abilities and a great hold, and nearly always in the corner of the mouth which aids unhooking.
