Southwest Florida Weekend Fishing 4Cast

November 11-13

Offshore

There were good reports on the marks, as close as 3 miles, and as far out as your boat would manage. The sometimes turbulent and windy conditions kept smaller boats close to shore. There were plenty of mangrove snapper, whiting, grunts and Spanish on the close marks. The deeper marks and ledges held gag and red groupers, “slab” snapper and goliath grouper.

The huge bait pods held masses of Spanish mackerel. If you dragged a deep-diving plug or hooked-up a legal size Spanish mackerel to your line, you had a good chance at a smoker king too. There are plenty of big sharks around to tear up your baits and mangle your terminal tackle. That’s fishing though…nothing ventured, nothing gained or lost.

Sarasota-Englewood

Redfish are still the target of choice if you’re looking for a nice fish dinner, as well as numbers of willing takers. Snook are thick in the feeder creeks and around the bars on the incoming tides. There are scads of juvenile “liners” that’ll take a live bait, scented plastic or fly. Keep moving from spot to spot and you’ll find the bite. The features and docks are holding big sheepshead, black drum and snapper. Shrimp, shrimp and more shrimp are the top bait. Trout are active but off limits for harvesting, so handle the specks with care.

Quick overview

Good points

it is truly portable – nothing quite like closing the boot and driving off with no visible sign that you’ve been kayak fishing for several hours! it is very long, therefore it is quicker than many fishing kayaks.  It is also about half the weight, so it’s easy to paddle. it converts to two persons. you can store it wherever in the winter months.

Bad points

you have to dry it (see below for my solution) before storing it away for any length of time. lack of secure storage – everything has to be in dry bags. it’s fiddly to assemble, with quite a few design issues (see below for more details). it’s not a dedicated...

DIY - February 2012 Kayak fishing is my passion, and over the last few years I have broken and lost a fair bit of gear in the surf – part of the price for enjoying sport off the beach, I guess. My goal at the beginning was to get in successfully and then master one-metre
