Group Wants Boathouse on Red River For Canoeing, Kayaking
GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - A nonprofit group wants to make it possible for you to rent canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards on the Red River.
The group wants to build a boathouse on the greenway in East Grand Forks, but some city council members want a closer look at the plans.
Andy Magness with Ground Up Adventures presented four possible sites for a boathouse to be located along the river in East Grand Forks.
But council members don't want a permanent structure built in the flood plain.
"East Grand Forks has the unique position of having access to both the Red River and the Red Lake River," Magness said.
Ground Up Adventures is a nonprofit group that was started in January. The group wants to get more people using both rivers by building a boathouse that's accessible to everyone.
"We have this wonderful greenway and everybody is biking on it and running on it and then right in the middle of it, is this phenomenal river that people either see as dangerous or dirty. People who paddle on it know that it's neither, and so we really want to change the perception and get people out there," Magness said.

The first option is a 7 mile race with men’s kayak, women’s kayak, and combined tandem kayak/canoe categories.
This race is recreational class only.
Race awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for men’s and women’s kayaks, and 1st and 2nd place for combined tandem kayak/canoe category.
The second option is a 5 mile river rally for those who choose to just relax and enjoy the scenery. This 5 mile river rally has no class or gender group. The rally requires the participants to find clues and answer questions along the river. The paddler with the most correct answers will be the winner of the rally.
This event starts at the Inglis By-Pass Spillway of the Withlacoochee River and ends at the Winding River Park in Yankeetown.
At the end of the event, participants will be shuttled back to their vehicles.
This would be a great event for my family. We have one paddler that loves to race his kayak; three paddlers that like a little competition but mostly like to paddle and enjoy the scenery, and a fourth paddler who just loves to relax when he paddles.
