Preserving clean water is his world

D an Plath, 34, has lived in Indiana and Illinois his entire life, but I had a sneaking suspicion his people originally were from north of this neck of the woods. He pronounces words such as "about" like the late Peter Jennings, the Canadian-born former ABC News anchor.

Plath lives in Westville with his wife, Vicky; they've been married 10 years. The Plaths have two children, Eric, 2, and Katie, 5 months.

There isn't a blade of Kentucky bluegrass or red fescue to be found on his 5-acre spread; his "yard" is planted in tallgrass prairie.

Plath is the environmental health and safety coordinator-water program leader for NiSource. He's based in Merrillville, but coordinates NiSource's water programs corporatewide. He also manages NIPSCO's Karner blue butterfly habitat conservation plan and is president and founder of the Northwest Indiana Paddling Association.

"My family is originally from Minnesota and Iowa," Plath began. "My dad wrestled in college and for the Navy. My four brothers and I all wrestled for Rich South High School (in Richton Park, Ill.)."
